" What cyber bullies don't often realize is that, Behind the Screen, there are real people that they can scar. But they don't just hurt their victims -- they hurt themselves. "

Our project is committed to helping all students involved with cyber bullying incidents. No matter if you are the victim, the digital by-stander, or the cyber bully, we believe you should have all the information you need to make the high school experience better for everyone. We encourage you to use this website as a reference tool .
the Project Video After students in grades 7-12 told us anonymously what it was like to be themselves, we used their powerful responses to create this video. We recorded their written answers with our voices.
Special Thanks go out to MRU students, Debra Gardner-Baasch, Karen McCalla, Suzanne Striglia, the additional Stage 40 voice actors, Matt Mattenson, and the MRU Tech-Staff. |

About us:
We are four students in grades 10 through 12, who came together for a common cause. What do we share? We are all in Mill River's new Social Media in Action class. In our first marking period, we wrote about stories of teens who are tormented each day by cyber bullies, even some who have committed suicide. But we also worked with stories about students who stood up, made a difference, and used the Internet for good; and that's just what we want to do!
Ashley L.
Ashley is doing this project because she herself has been bullied and she knows how it feels to be completely alone in high school. People who bully just want to be powerful. Ashley has learned the importance of not letting those people have power over her emotions have helped her through the years. People don't realize how hurtful they can really be and how deep words can cut. If Ashley can stop the spread of bullying to at least one person, or help one person that has been bullied, she will know she made a difference.

"If you really knew me, you would know that my real mom is on drugs and she abused me for most of my life. I haven't seen her in 8 years."
Brittany M.
Brittany M. decided to help in The Behind The Screen Project, because she has been bullied herself and wants to help make the bullying stop. Schools are becoming really miserable for some students and they can’t escape it. It can lead to self harm and suicide. She doesn't like going into school knowing that kids are being bullied and feeling miserable about themselves. Everyday she goes to school with the goal to stand up to bullies and make school a better place. Her other goal is to get more people to help her put all of the bullying to an end.

"If you really knew me, you would know that I walk into school thinking that I need to impress everyone, and you would know that I am always let down. "
Kimmie S.
Kimmie is a 16 year old junior. She loves music and reading. She has decided to work on BTSP because she has been a victim of bullying and understands how awkward it can be to talk to adults about your issues. She believes that cyber-bullying should be stopped and that all students and young people should be able to confide in a friend about their problems. She hopes that students use our website as inspiration to use their voice and stand up to bullies online.

"If you really knew me, you'd know that my mean attitude and behavior, is just a cover up of my insecurities."
Skyler A.
Skyler is 15 years old and a sophomore at Mill River. When she was in grades K-2, she attended a private school in Rutland, Vermont. Skyler had to transfer to public school as she entered third grade. Things like desks, separated grades, in-school nurses, and gym class were completely foreign concepts to her. Because of this and her younger age, she was bullied by her peers and was mistreated by some of her teachers. Her ability to adapt to her new environment (and her love of the theatrical arts) gave her a bold personality and fun-loving spirit. "What cyber bullies don't often realize is that, Behind the Screen, there are real people that they can scar. But they don't just hurt their victims," She says "They hurt themselves." She wants to end cyber bullying in all schools.

"If you really knew me, you would know that my aunt died of breast cancer when I was young. I buy products that donate to breast cancer research as a small way to relieve the guilt I have for not being allowed to attend her funeral."
